When I see land you will conjure up a storm

The college experience is clearly already paying off. I was sent a song from a fellow class of 2014 member, and lo and behold I was given a song I think I really like (just noticed-it is also on the Blogwave Summer mix from DailyBeatz-it does take on a different feel on the Blogwave Summer mix, more electronic, less indie). It was one of those songs that first listen didn't really do it justice, and the music video doesn't really do the song justice-in fact it kind of hurts the song (if you've seen the video for The Mountain Goats "This Year" its along those lines-although it worked for latter). The track is called "Hustle" by a band called Tunng.

It kind of has an electronic-indie rock feel going which ends up being really appealing. There is also a pretty strong percussion vibe going that drives the melody which relies heavily on the short guitar fills. As for the vocals, Becky Jacobs and Mike Lindsey come out pretty flat, but fitting I guess for the song. Anyway, enjoy the music-this band is kind of catching for me.

Floatin over the black top

The first time I heard of the band Free Energy, it was on another blog, The Hood Internet. It was one of the bands songs mashed up with a song by Drake, whom I am not a particularly large fan of. However the beat just fit so well it was hard to ignore. I thought that would probably be the last I heard of Free Energy for a little while. A week or two later it seemed they were everywhere, they were featured on the Pitchfork home page, followed by being put on to DailyBeatz's Blogwave Summer mix. I delved in to the band a little more.

I'd say I'm not in love with their music, but when I heard "Bang Pop," I was struck. This was an honest to goodness Weezer sound-alike. Not that it is a bad thing, but I do find it interesting. As similar as the two bands sound, I cannot say it takes away from the bands sound. For the most part they sound pretty tight, and "Bang Pop" off of their freshman album, Stuck On Nothing which just recently came out. All in all, there isn't really much to say about this song, other than the fact that if you like Weezer you will certainly have an eerie feeling when you listen to this. Could it be the second coming? Just for posterity, I will also post the Drake mashup.

Build me up, bring me down

I am a huge fan of Tegan and Sara and I have been for a while now. I just really enjoy listening to their voices which I find quirky and the music is great. I was going to write about a week ago about their new song "Alligator" but Dailybeatz wrote an entry the same day about it so I decided to hold off.

Oddly enough on a related note, I hated "Creator" by Santigold (real name Santi White) the first time I heard it (and in fact, continue to hate it). I just think its a little to electronic for my taste and it really just stresses me out. For a while there I cast Santigold aside as an artist that I knew existed but scoffed at her music.

However I was recently turned on to her song "L.E.S. Artistes" by fellow editor "ɱ." I was instantly struck by how much it sounded like Tegan and Sara! I was hooked. Actually, the first time I listened to it, I actually thought it was the Canadian duo.

This song however is a little more drum heavy which isn't very characteristic of a T&S song. Also it just seems to have a different vibe, maybe a little more fierce (not sure why, but that just seems to be the best fit for a description). It's a pretty good pump up song with some pretty slick guitar, very melodic, with a strong rhythm section in general. It definitely gets the blood flowing.

The video is pretty intense as well. It is a take on the movie "The Holy Mountain" (almost linked it but the trailer freaked me out) which I do have a little background knowledge on (it is one of the trippiest movies of all time, and is a cult classic, although, I have never seen it myself).
